Protection of Flora

Healthy, functioning and resilient environments are our best defence against a changing climate. Protected areas build resilience by controlling other habitat threats such as weeds and feral animals, by managing water resources and regenerating vegetation. It forms a buffer against the impacts of climate change, providing refuges for species to survive and adapt, reducing the extinction risk for our native species. We plant trees every year and continue to support previous planting for successful reforestation.

Significant Flora to Wild Mountains

Flora species identified as having special significance under Nature Conservation Act 1992:

A rainforest vine - Clematis fawcettii - Vulnerable

A rainforest vine - Callerya australis - Rare

A ground orchid - Helmholtzia glaberrima - Rare

Supplementary flora surveys may be undertaken by Council into the future to add to the current Flora List.

Protection of Vegetation & Habitat Values (Tree Removal)

All native and local flora species found in the Wild Mountains Nature Refuge are protected.  Native species introduced from outside of their normal range are not protected and may be removed.

Large habitat trees will be especially protected.  Much of Australia’s fauna depends on tree hollows for shelter or nesting.  Dead trees will be left standing if safe to do so, as they provide an abundance of hollows and many birds use them for perching. Trees suitable for local construction purposes would be expected to be sourced from areas outside of the Wild Mountains Nature Refuge.

Identified Rare and Threatened flora species are monitored. Special projects are undertaken from time to time on the recovery of these species.  It is expected that Wild Mountains will continue to actively participate in any recovery initiatives.  Special arrangements for propagation may be required for these rare species, see below.

Seed Collection

We collect seed from the Wild Mountains Nature Reserve to rehabilitate areas that are disturbed by human activity or invasive weeds for a number of reasons.  Seed collect ed from the Wild Mountains Nature Reserve  has greater chance of resilience in this environment. Also we protect the bioregional diversity  specific to this area with seeds from the area and avoid  introduction of non local soils, nematoads and fungi with use of soils from the property .

Seeds for regional use may be collected from any common species in the covenant area in small quantities and not in commercial quantities.  Collection of seeds will be in accordance with current legislation and codes, especially for Rare and Threatened species.
